A prospective female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member has died in a road accident on her way to the orientation camp in Afikpo North Council in Ebonyi.
She was among 12 prospective corps members in a 14-seater bus involved in the accident.
The lady, whose name could not be ascertained at press time, was said to have died from injuries sustained even as her colleagues and other passengers were also injured.
Source said she boarded the bus in Enugu heading to the NYSC camp in Afikpo for the three-week orientation when the driver lost control and rammed it into a truck on the road.
The lady and her colleagues are believed to be prospective members of the 2024 Batch C Stream II set of NYSC members.
The victims were rescued by residents and security agencies from the mangled bus and taken to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) for treatment, according to Vanguard.
NYSC Ebonyi Sector Commander Igwe Henry confirmed the accident but said he could not provide details of casualties as the victims were rescued before his officers arrived at the scene.
“At the time our men from Amasiri Unit Command got the information and got to the scene, the victims had been rescued,” he disclosed.
“However, the crash occurred at about 14.00 hours. The route was Amasiri-Okiigwe which they call Amenu village in Okposi.
“Two vehicles were involved, one was a Toyota commercial bus, grey colour and the other was a Mercedes-Benz tipper (truck), a commercial Mercedes-Benz tipper, the regular tipper that you see around.”
NYSC Ebonyi Coordinator Foluke Oladeinde expressed shock over the accident.
“I am not in the right frame of mind to talk now. I am in the hospital now. Yes the accident occurred but I can’t talk right now,” she said.
